George Washington’ s Thanksgiving Proclamation

Issued by President George Washington, at the request of Congress, on October 3, 1789

By the President of the United States of America, a Proclamation.

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and—Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me “to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:”

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favor, able interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquillity, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted; for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations, and beseech Him to pardon our national and other trangressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally, to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

In today’s America, this proclamation- worded in the specific, humble and reverential manner in which it’s written, would be considered an unacceptable violation of the First Amendment because Washington mentioned God.

Nevermind the fact that Washington in the first paragraph of this proclamation, noted that both Houses of Congress requested him to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, observed by gratefully acknowledging the many favors of God- particularly for granting them the opportunity to peaceably establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.

That bit of information, as real as it is, would still “offend” the “sensibilities” of many Americans who have forgotten not only the Providential manner in which the United States was created and- for now, sustained, but these same Americans have also made it their stated and or unstated mission to remove all vestiges of God from public spaces.  This unholy crusade has and will continue to have very specific moral consequences that will continue to negatively affect America’s culture- complicating, as Washington maintains, the promotion of the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue.

True religion and moral virtue- absent a moral God whose character moral virtue is predicated upon- hasn’t, doesn’t and won’t work. Absent a moral God, virtue means whatever one wants it to mean.  In other words, moral relativism and confusion.

My prayer is that we continue to give thanks to God for the many blessings that he has bestowed upon America and through America, to the many countries around the world.

Psalm 118:1 – Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; For His lovingkindness is everlasting.

The Gettysburg Address

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate — we can not consecrate — we can not hallow — this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us — that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion — that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedomand that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

Oprah Thinks Obama’s Critics Are Motivated By Race

A prominent member of the Racial Guardians, Oprah Winfrey, has opined on the topic of racism.

Again.

In an interview with the BBC to promote Lee Daniel’s The Butler in which she plays a starring role, Winfrey said regarding Obama,

There’s a level of disrespect for the office that occurs in some cases, and maybe even many cases, because he’s African-American.  There’s no question about that.  And it’s the kind of thing no one ever says, but everybody’s thinking.”

What disrespect, exactly?  Since there are ‘some cases’ and ‘maybe even many cases’ as Oprah claims, what are some examples that prove this flimsy accusation?

She gives but ONE example to prove her case- Joe Wilson rudely, yelling out “You lie!” during president Obama’s speech to Congress touting the perceived benefits of the forthcoming Affordable Care Act.  Yes it was rude to do it, as Wilson himself acknowledged and correctly apologized for it.

Even still, this in-and-of-itself as “proof” is questionable in regards to race because Wilson’s accusation wasn’t amended by a racial insult.  He didn’t say, “You lie, blackie (or coon or ‘brotha’, etc.)!”; he simply and wrongly accused the president of lying.

This one example, from four years ago and absent of racial malice surely isn’t enough to buttress Oprah’s claim of disrespect simply because the president is black.

According to Oprah, people disrespect Obama because he’s black, not because:

–          he lied more than three dozen times about Obamacare, telling the country that “if they liked their doctor, they could keep their doctor” and “if they liked their health insurance, they could keep their health insurance”;

–          he drew his red line in the sand regarding Syria, saying ““We have been very clear to the Assad regime, but also to other players on the ground, that a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized.  That would change my calculus.  That would change my equation.” Then Obama lied, again and said “I didn’t set a red line, the world set a red line”;

–          he was upstaged and bailed out by Russian President Vladimir Putin when Putin decided to act as peacemaker, intervening to prevent an unwanted military strike against Syria.  Putin’s intervention effectively rescued the president from his self-created stalemate of having to potentially take reluctant military action against Bashar Assad for using chemical weapons against his own people;

–          he was ignored by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani;

–          he snooped on Americans and other world leaders through the use of the NSA;

–          he attacked and intimidated his political opponents with the help of the IRS;

–          he has exemplified disinterested and inept economic stewardship over an economy which currently has an unemployment rate of 7.3% not including the more than 11 million people who have left the labor force since January of 2009, his first month in office; which includes 47 million Americans on SNAP which represents roughly 23 million American households;

–          he spent $800 billion on “stimulus” which didn’t reduce or slow the unemployment rate as he promised;

–          he helped facilitate the redefinition of marriage by directing Attorney General Eric Holder not to defend DOMA, and “evolved” toward supporting same-sex marriage;

–          he weakened our military by repealing DADT and continues to fire experienced generals who disagree with his ideological vision for the military;

–          he allowed the Fast and Furious gun-walking program to be used as a political platform for “gun control.” It turned into a scandal when it was reported that of the hundreds of guns lost during the sting operation, one was used to kill border patrol agent Brian Terry;

–          he’s wasted trillions of dollars on the fantasy of “green energy” and “climate change”;

–          he hasn’t done or said a meaningful thing about the four Americans killed in Benghazi.  As a matter of fact, Obama lied about the events, sent then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and then-U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice out on television to lie to Americans as to how and why this tragedy happened.  Obama then went on Letterman’s show saying that the Benghazi episode was the result of a video produced by a “shadowy character” mocking Muhammad, knowing full well that wasn’t the truth.

Glad that’s cleared up.  Thanks for the clarification, Oprah, but I regret to inform you that the race card that was once effectively used to shield Obama from criticism no longer works.  His lies, ineptness and poor stewardship transcend his color and now has to be judged on his actions which reveal his character.

Equally as important- shame on you Oprah.  Shame on you for mischaracterizing the philosophical and ideological differences people have with the president as racial “disrespect.”  You have some nerve considering who the bulk of your fan base used to be.
